The staff of the Onida Watchman was among the 180 people from the newspaper industry who gathered in Medora last weekend to exchange ideas and stay abreast of industry changes during the South Dakota Newspaper Association’s annual meeting. Taking center stage was the announcement of the winners in the SDNA’s Better Newspapers contest to identify and spotlight the best work done in newspapers across the state last year.

The contest’s top awards were given in General Excellence, a measure of the newspaper overall – reporting, writing, photography, opinion, design and advertising, identifying the newspaper’s overall quality and commitment to journalism.

“Along with spotlighting and honoring award-winning journalism, contests provide a great learning tool for newspapers that participate,” said SDNA Executive Director David Bordewyk. “It’s an excellent opportunity to see how one’s professional work measures up against peers and also to learn new ideas and tips that can help editors and reporters improve their work going forward.”

In its circulation category, weeklies with a circulation of less than 1,150 – the largest circulation category comprised of 32 participating newspapers – The Onida Watchman received awards in ten divisions as follows.

For their work on the Guide to Hunting in Central South Dakota 2018, editor and compositor Marileen Tilberg, advertising designer Sarah Ramler, and reporter Sheila Ring received 1st Place, Best Special Issue. Contest judges found the guide ‘an excellent balance of feature stories, photos and other useful information. Well organized and easy to browse. Nice work.’

Tilberg received a first place nod in the Best Single Ad Idea for the ad she designed in honor of husband Darell Tilberg’s 70th birthday “Back in 1948.” In the Most Original Creative Idea division, Tilberg received second place for the “Congratulations  ad from Wickersham Construction to the Boys State B Champions,” ad that was judged to demonstrate ‘Great community spirit in sports, nicely done.’

“The Onida Watchman Prancin’ and Dancin’ Christmas Greeting” which earned third place as the Best Newspaper Promotion was considered ‘eye-catching; shows readers your team having fun. Good job.’
