The Sully Buttes Chargers girls team earned first place in their 7th grade division at the recent Queen City Classic basketball tournament in Spearfish. The team, made up of three 7th graders and four 6th graders, played in an eight-team division. The girls started the tournament with a 36-26 win against Gettsyburg. Leading the scoring was Marinda Archer with 12 points and Lauren Wittler with 10. Cayley Bush added six, with Lacey Hepker and Kallie Murphy contributing 4 apiece.
The Chargers met the Sturgis Strike in the second round, winning 30-22 to advance to the championship. All the girls shot their way into the scorebook, with Lacey and Cayley leading the way with 8 apiece. Marinda and Kallie each added 4 points. Bailee Langdeau and Brooklynn Bradford came off the bench and contributed 4 points and 2 points, respectively.
In the championship game, the girls came out strong against the Sturgis Shock, leading 15-5 at the half. In the second half the Chargers were faced with some hot shooting and a press defense by the stubborn Sturgis team, but the girls worked hard to come out on top with a final score of 22-19. Marinda had 12 points, including 6 for 7 at the free throw line. Rounding out the scoring were Lauren with 5 points, Cayley with 4 and Kallie with a free throw.
