After starting slow, the Sully Buttes Chargers found a way to get past a quick, aggressive Lemmon Cowboy team, and punch their ticket back to the State B tournament to defend their title, thanks to a 66-53 victory Thursday night in Timber Lake.

The sixth-ranked Chargers will take on the third-rated Clark/Willow Lake Cyclones at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, a rematch of the 2018 Championship game. Sully Buttes came away with the State B Championship last year. Clark/Willow Lake is 20-2 on the season and defeated Dell Rapid’s St. Mary 66-33 in the SoDak 16 to secure their trip to the State B tournament.

The Chargers trailed by as much as 11 in the first quarter but rallied late to take the lead 22-21 when Nick Wittler hit a three-point shot to close out the quarter. The Chargers had better success in the second half and led 35-26 at the midway break.

Lemmon outscored the Chargers in the third—16-13, to pull closer, with a 48-42 Sully Buttes lead after three. The Cowboys were forced to foul late in the final quarter, and Sully Buttes hit just enough free throws to complete the victory. Sully Buttes struggled at the free throw line hitting 13 of 25, while Lemmon hit nine of sixteen. The Chargers had 17 turnovers and the Cowboys 15.

Once again leading the way in scoring was Nick Wittler, finishing with 25 points, 11 rebounds and 5 steals, while Cam Ogle had a big night in the low post, scoring nineteen. For Lemmon, junior Britt Oliver finished with 17 points. The Chargers’ record is now 19-3, while Lemmon finishes at 18-5.
