Adrian Gruis and Trinity Kenzy are Youth Advisory Council members through the Missouri Shores Domestic Violence Center in Pierre. They participate in quarterly meetings, collaborate on project goals to enhance awareness and education of teen dating violence, network with other students, and engage with their peers to prevent, recognize, and stop teen dating violence.
“I wanted to join Missouri Shores to help advocate for teens and young adults that cannot advocate for themselves, whether it be they are scared or don’t know where to turn to. I want to be a voice and person that they can go to for help and advice, I do not want anyone to feel they are alone in a hard time when there are people out there to help them.” stated Adrian.
February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. One in three U.S. teens will experience physical, sexual, or emotional abuse from someone they’re in a relationship with before they become adults, the release says. Feb. 7 is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Day and Orange Night was held at the doubleheader basketball game in Onida to bring awareness and educate the public on teen dating violence. Orange is the color associated with advocates, activists, and survivors of teen dating violence. During the evening statistics were given about teen dating violence. Posters were seen throughout the gym. Many students wore orange clothing, hair bows and face paint to show their support.
Trinity says “I joined Missouri Shores to advocate for people who are in abusive relationships. Whether that be physical, emotional, or verbal. I want to be able to help teenagers and people who are in domestic violent relationships. I also want people to feel comfortable to talk to me about what it is they’re going through. Missouri Shores has a shelter that people can go to if they feel unsafe.
