Trooper Sean Needham reads to Onida kindergartners

Committed to improving lives, strengthening communities and fostering civic engagement through service and volunteering, the Central South Dakota Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) issued a call for volunteer reading buddies in a story that ran in the Watchman last fall. In response to the story, Joyce Sack and Karen Byrum arrived at the Onida elementary school fired up to read stories to kindergarten students.

Their arrival was unexpected, because the volunteers being sought in last fall’s story were for the reading buddies program at the Blunt elementary.

Undaunted, kindergarten teacher Angie Hill and Elementary Principal Amber Mikkelsen put the pair to work reading to the students. Soon, Joyce and Karen were joined in reading to the students by South Dakota Highway Patrol Troopers Sarah Schumacher and Sean Needham.
