The force of the blast ripped open the windows, corners, and entry.

Firefighters were called to 116 S Main Street, the scene of an explosion, shortly after 5:00 p.m. Saturday, Christmas Eve. Currently serving as the Davis Chiropractic Office, firefighters found the building in flames which they were able to knock down quite quickly.

“The Onida Fire Department responded with two apparatus and fourteen personnel,” said incident commander Bobby Ramler. “Three personnel sent inside determined the building was unoccupied. We then went into an attack mode fighting the fire from both inside and outside the building. Fire was quickly knocked down and brought under control.” Ramler says the department was on scene for one and a half hours. “Some of the hazards we faced was fire fighting in sub zero temps and the structural damage to the building.”

The structure dates back to Sully County’s founding days in 1883. When JH Gropengieser purchased the Onida Journal in 1894, he moved the building in which was housed to lot 13, block one, original Onida where he established the Onida Watchman.

The Watchman came under new ownership in 1905 and the business relocated. Among the things the building was used for throughout its existence are a barber shop, beauty parlor, Rawleigh Products store, a jewelry store, the Vanity Beauty Shoppe for many years, the Watchman office, Little Chargers Preschool, Crazy B’s Tees, Pottery on the Prairie, and most recently as Davis Chiropractic. The upstairs apartment was also home to several families.

The force of the blast blew out the back of the building and ripped open the windows, corners, and entry on the front.

The building is thought to be a total loss. Davis Chiropractic has relocated to 104 S Main, the suite at the north end of the Sovell Office building.
