After serving two years as 1st Vice President of the South Dakota Department American Legion Auxiliary, Mary Jo Stier was named Department President during their convention June 26. The member of the local ALA to serve as Department President was Mellitta Schultz in 1971.

An extra year was added to Stier’s tenure as 1st Vice President since the South Dakota Department didn’t hold elections or have their convention in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During her term as Department President, Stier plans to S.M.I.L.E by Serving our veterans, Mentoring our youth, Informing the public, Loving each other and Educating members.

Representing thankfulness, remembrance, and happiness, Stier chose the Calla Lily as the flower to characterize her presidency. Her theme of hope will be portrayed in the colors she chose, yellow for happiness, hope and security and green for new beginnings, hope and peace.

Reflective of Stier’s own supportive nature, she chose the songs ‘Lean on Me’ by Bill Withers and ‘Stand By Me’ by Ben E. King as the theme songs of her presidency.

Stier’s homecoming celebration will be held on Saturday, July 31 at the Phoenix Center starting with a social hour at 1:30 p.m. and program at 2:00 p.m.
