The Sully County Historical Society (SCHS) was recognized by the South Dakota State Historical Society (SDSHS) with a 2022 Governor’s Awards for History for their efforts in preserving state history during an awards luncheon on April 23.

The Sully County Historical Society was officially formed March 1, 2021. The group initially gathered to discuss how to raise $360,000 to restore the interior dome of the 110-year-old courthouse, and they quickly realized their passion extended beyond one building. Those gathered decided to form the Sully County Historical Society as a nonprofit organization to support the preservation of Sully County history for present and future generations. In its short period of existence, the SCHS has demonstrated how a small group of people can ignite community pride and spirit by tapping into shared history.

With the installation of the stained glass in the courthouse dome on April 19, the SCHS’s initating project was completed. Projects in development are removing the drop ceiling in the courtoom and making repairs at the Okobojo Cemetery.
