While COVID had other plans for the ABO school district, from mandated mask wearing to the cancellation of yet another senior trip, the Sully Buttes Class of 2021 still managed to pull through the year as graduation ceremonies commenced on Saturday, May 22nd.

This year, families were allowed to be closer to their successful graduates as the number of COVID cases in Sully County have dwindled, thus a proper graduation was able to finally happen.

To the classic Pomp and Circumstance, the graduating Class of 2021 marched out of the hallways and into their seats and a welcoming by Landon Severson followed. Two addresses were given to the class and the audience by Salutatorian Garrett Petersen and Valedictorian Zach Farries.

Introduced by Sully Buttes High School Principal Jeremy Chicoine was capstone and business teacher Vicki Lentz as the commencement speaker. Lentz had placed several different rocks in the totes of the graduates, each with personalized words of achievement and encouragement, along with a note from Lentz herself.

Guidance Counselor Kris Sweeter was in charge of the presentation of scholarships students had earned during the school year, and diplomas were distributed by Mr. Kevin Pickner.

After the ceremony a parade of the entire Class of 2021 was held as KGFX’s DT Meyer, the voice of Sully Buttes sports, announced their majors and plans for the summer to the audience. At the beginning of the parade, Blaine Duffel gave his closing speech.

After commencement exercises concluded, several students held grad parties where families and friends reunited to celebrate the graduation of many.
