To many who first walk into Sully Buttes High School, Mary Jo Stier’s is the first face they see. In addition to her role as administrative assistant, Mary Jo has a statewide leadership role as 1st Vice President at the American Legion Axillary. She also serves as the South Dakota Auxiliary’s chairman of Veteran Affairs and Rehabilitation (VA and R).
Mary Jo is the first from the area to seek statewide office since Mellitta Schultz in 1970-1971. She says she decided to seek statewide office because the auxiliary is “a great organization, so I decided I needed to either step up or get out.”
The decision sent her on a journey of moving up the ranks of the organization. She has served as 2nd Vice President, and is currently 1st Vice President. “I’ve served as Community Service chairman and as Emergency Auxiliary Fund chairman, from which people apply for grants after a national disaster,” said Mary Jo. “I’ve also worked with Children and Youth.”
Mary Jo says she’s waiting to hear from the national organization if the National Convention will take place in Phoenix, at the end of August. “Right now, everything is going as planned, but if they have to cancel national, we cancel the state, which in turn we can’t be elected,” said Mary Jo explaining that she should be at the end of her term of office except that last year’s state convention and election was canceled.
