Since November of 2021, Courtney Millage has been the Administrative Assistant in the office at the Blunt Attendance Center.
After graduating Lyman High School, Millage attended a year of college in pursuit of an Elementary Education degree. “And then I got married and started my family,” said Millage, adding that her favorite aspect of the job in the school office is “being around the kids.”
Millage says that in addition to secretarial duties such as answering the phone and running messages, the job also came with lunchroom and library duties.
“I’m the lunch lady, so I serve lunch and clean up after,” said Millage. “I’m also the librarian, so every Wednesday I do an activity with the kids and help them check out books.” Millage also dispenses medicines and helps out in the classrooms.
The mother of five says that the position had been vacant a week when she called then Elementary Principal Amber Mikkelsen about it. “I asked if the job was still available, filled out an application and interviewed and got the job.”
Millage says that the job is pretty much what she expected. “There were no real surprises,” said Millage. “Anything they’ve asked of me, I just go with it. That’s how we roll in Blunt – we all work together.”
Millage has found having the same school schedule as her children, Joseph grade 8, Cami grade 6, Madi grade 4, Hunter grade 1 and Dallas preschool, advantageous for her family. “I’ve been able to get them to their sports events and pick them up from practice,” said Millage.
The family has made their home in Blunt for the past seven years. Prior to accepting the Administrative Assistant position, Millage volunteered with her church’s TYD after school program. She also helps with the Feeding South Dakota food distribution when she is able, helps lead American Heritage Girls, and is currently serving as a Girl Scout leader.
As a family, the Millages enjoy camping and fishing, and “we do a lot of sports running.”
