Helen Gail King was born February 28, 1940 in Pierre, SD to Henry and Lucille (Adams) Krull. After her mother passed away, she was raised by her stepmother, Lois. She grew up on the family farm south of Harrold and graduated from Harrold High School in 1958. She went on to attend college at Northern State University, then began working for the State of South Dakota for 49 years, the majority of that in the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Helen enjoyed working with all the rural fire departments during her time there and often talked about all the friends she made over the years.
She was united in marriage to Charles “Chuck” King in 1962 and to this union two sons were born, Spike and Mark. They spent their time following their boys in their sports from childhood through high school. Helen was a life-long member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was also a member of the Blunt United Methodist Church, Blunt Study Club, and served on the Blunt City Council. She enjoyed crafting, reading, and spending time with her family and friends.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her sons Charles “Spike” (Brenda) King, of Blunt and Mark King, of Pierre; grandchildren: Rachel (Cory) Comes, of Blunt and Charles “Chip” (Kendall) King, of Highmore; great-grandchildren: Carmyn Comes and Charles King; one sister Ellen Miller (Wayne Ziegler) of Seneca.
