Lynette Singleton, 56, Ft. Pierre, died Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Avera Oahe Manor in Gettysburg.
Lynette Ann Simon, daughter of Alice (Rausch) and Stephen Simon, Jr., was born at Gettysburg on June 17, 1966. She was brought up at the Simon family farm eight miles west and one mile south of Hoven. Her formal education consisted of St. Anthony’s Parochial School, Hoven High School (Class of 1984), and Black Hills State College in Spearfish where she earned an AA Degree in Travel Management. She was then employed briefly at a Super 8 in Pierre. She was best known, though, for the many years she worked as travel agent and manager of AAA Travel Agency in Pierre. In 1998 she was presented the Pride of Pierre award from the Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce. She was well known to be exceptional at solving travel difficulties quickly 24 hours per day for her customers and many others besides. As people drove by the office on Sioux Avenue, they could see her sitting at her desk through the display window. People honked their horn at her and waved as they were driving by, and she waved back to them.
Lynette enjoyed this vocation immensely; however, a brain tumor diagnosis in May 2015 forced her retirement. After her workspace became vacant, people continued to drive by, honk their horn and wave at her empty work space in her honor. She lived at home with Home Health Care assistance, Avera Maryhouse in Pierre, and Avera Oahe Manor in Gettysburg. She accepted her suffering, never complained, was always joking or laughing to the delight of medical staff and others. See her CaringBridge site.
Lynette married John Singleton at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Hoven on May 21, 1994. They lived their entire married life in Ft. Pierre. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish of Stanley County in Ft. Pierre. Her pastimes included traveling and camping. A perfect day for Lynette would be sitting on a swing at the beach in Cancun looking over the ocean.
Lynette is survived by her mother, Alice, of Hoven; John, her husband of 28 years; and three brothers—Craig (Patty) Simon of Aberdeen, Stephen (Peggy) Simon of Groton, and Fr. Brian Simon of Gettysburg.
She was preceded in death by her father, Stephen Jr. on May 1, 2004; her son, Alex, on February 15, 2023; and her brother, Gerard, on August 16, 2020.
Wake services were at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
Mass of Christian Burial was 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Hoven, with Fr. Brian Simon, Celebrant and Fr. Darin Schmidt, Con-celebrant.
