Melvin Schmitgen, 85, of Fort Pierre, passed away December 16, 2022.
Melvin was born on July 4, 1937 at home on a farm in Onida, South Dakota to John and Bertha (Hieb) Schmitgen.
In 1956, the Oahe Dam Project drew him, like many others, to Fort Pierre, South Dakota.
It was there that Melvin met the love of his life, Darlene. They were married in June of 1959. To this union two children were born: Melvin Jr. and Tina.
Melvin worked as a farmer, mechanic, miner, construction worker/foreman, police officer, city superintendent, restaurant owner and newspaper boy. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge, and Swishers Ballroom Dance Club. He loved to go dancing and every weekend he and Darlene could be found at the VFW, Moose, or American Legion. At Melvin's 80th Birthday Party he and Darlene danced the night away to the Norgaard Band, one of his favorites.
Forever grateful for his love and mourning his passing are his daughter Tina and son-in-law Barry. Preceding him in death are his parents, his wife Darlene and son Melvin Jr.
In lieu of flowers and food gifts, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice and the Pierre/Fort Pierre Area Humane Society.
