Sully Buttes will have three wrestlers competing at the state tournament, Saige Heath, Cateri Yellowhawk, and Lucas Yellowhawk. “The girls are heading back for the second time for Saige and the third time for Cateri,” said Chargers Head Wrestling Coach Brady Weischedel. “As for Lucas, it is his very first trip to the state tournament, and I’m excited for him to experience State. There really isn’t anything like it. I’m so excited for each of them to be able to compete on the grand stage in front of the entire state and show off all their hard work they put in this season.”
“We had three boys fall short of qualifying for State,” Weischedel continued. “Isaac Ramirez, Ely Heuertz, and Kadyn Westergren all fell just short. All three of them wrestled with a tremendous amount of heart, and they arguably wrestled some of their best matches all year.”
Sophomore Isaac Ramirez wrestled his final matches of the 2022-2023 season at the Region 1B Tournament and did not advance to wrestle at state. He was 2-2 on the day. Isaac received a round 1 bye. In round 2, he was defeated by Tanner Erickson of Potter County by fall at 1:46. In round 3, Isaac received a bye. He was pitted against Webster Area’s Trace Shoemaker for his fourth round match which he lost by fall at 1:44.
Sophomore Ely Heuertz also wrestled his final matches of the year at the Region tourney. He was 1-2 on the day, losing by fall at 1:05 to Chase Chambers of Clark/Willow Lake in the first round, receiving a bye in the second round, and losing by major decision 12-2 to Collin Dean of Redfield in the third.
In his weight class, sophomore Lucas Yellowhawk made his way to the championship match before settling for a second place finish. Lucas defeated Reed VanWormer of Deuel/Deubrook Area by fall at 1:45 in his first round match. He emerged the victor from the quarterfinal defeating Beau Schillng of Ipswich/Bowdle by fall at 2:55. Lucas won by tech fall 15-0 at 5:23 in the semifinal over Elliot Bratland of Clark/Willow Lake. In the battle for 1st place, Lucas lost to Redfield’s Mason Whitley by decision 7-2.
Freshman Kadyn Westergren received first and third round byes. In his second round match, Kadyn lost by fall at 1:32 to Dominic Constant of Deuel/Deubrook Area. In wrestle backs, Kadyn lost to Dustin Dirksen of Warner/Northwestern by fall at 1:44 ending his season.
Both Assistant Coach Kevin Heath and Wesichedel “are extremely proud of each of them and the way they competed,” said Wesichedel. “They have no reason to hang their heads; all three of them improved so much throughout the season. I always tell them ‘we don’t get down, we get determined.’ And I know they will come back next year even more d
